Owning a pet can be very rewarding, but it can also be very difficult, especially for new pet owners. If you have recently adopted a pet from VOCAL or elsewhere, please consider these pet training tips.
By spending some time on pet training, you’ll help improve the relationship you have with your pet. Training can actually help save your pet’s life as it learns to respond to your voice and come when called. If lost or surrendered, trained dogs are also considered very adoptable.
Keep Your Dog On A Leash Away From Home
One of the most important things you can do is to keep your dog on a leash when you’re away from home. This allows you to be in control of your pet and protect it. Getting your dog used to being on a leash can be a great pet training aid as your dog will realize that you are in control.
Give Your Pets Companionship
Dogs love having a big yard to run around in and explore, for sure. But make sure you’re not leaving your dog alone for long periods of time. They crave companionship with you and your family.
Be Patient With Your New Pet
Have reasonable expectations for your pet and know that most behavior problems can be solved. Some behavior problems can actually be health related. If your new pet displays a certain problem for a long period of time, see your veterinarian.
Enroll Your Dog in A Training Course
Look for a positive reinforcement training class that will help you control your dog’s behavior. This can also be a great bonding experience for you and your dog. You and your dog will love the results.
Exercise Your Pet
Make sure your dog is getting enough exercise each day. Walking your dog twice a day plus some play time is generally enough exercise for most dogs. It can also be great exercise for you, too.
